Education Committee Discusses School Sentinels

Education Committee Discusses School Sentinels
PIERRE, SD -

Since the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School, gun control has been at the forefront of many political and personal conversations. Wednesday, South Dakota lawmakers will discuss the best way to keep students in the state safe.

Currently, only law enforcement officers are allowed to carry guns inside schools.

House Bill 1087 proposes the state allow school districts to arm teachers, faculty or volunteers to respond to violence in their schools.  It gives the school board the power to decide whether to have a "sentinel" program, but if implemented, the bill requires the board to first consult with law enforcement agencies.

We'll be in the hearing in the House Education Committee and bring you the discussion later today on KELOLAND News.
