SD Lawmakers To Take Up Social Host Bill

January 23, 2013, 7:13 AM by Austin Hoffman

SD Lawmakers To Take Up Social Host Bill
PIERRE, SD -

It's been seven years since Joyce Glynn lost her 18-year-old son in a drunk driving crash.  Michael Glynn was on his way home from a house party when it happened.

Now the White River woman is dedicated to make sure it never happens again.  Wednesday, South Dakota lawmakers will look at a bill she hopes will help her mission.

The Senate State Affairs is scheduled to look at Senate Bill 94 Wednesday morning, which is aimed at making it illegal for adults to allow minors to drink on their property.

Under the proposal, any adult that allows it would face a Class 1 Misdemeanor if the minor is younger than 18 or Class 2 Misdemeanor if the minor is between 18 and 20 years old.

If an adult did not know the minor was younger than 21 and stops them from drinking, the proposal would consider that due diligence and they would not face charges.

However, it does not protect parents who are away from home but are aware their home could be used for underage drinking.

KELOLAND News will be at the hearing and bring you an update later today.
