Storm Center Update-Monday AM

January 21, 2013, 7:13 AM by Brian Karstens

SIOUX FALLS, SD -

It’s a very cold morning across KELOLAND with wind chills below -30 in many areas of the east.  Areas East River will be under wind chill advisories and warning for the day.  Be careful and minimize your exposure to the cold today.  Highs will stay below zero in the northeast, with slightly warmer teens in the west.  Light snow will continue to fall in western SD, a trend that will try to spread east later tonight and tomorrow.

Tomorrow will be warmer in western SD with highs returning to the lower 40s in Rapid City.  Sioux Falls and Aberdeen will be warmer too, but highs will stay in the lower teens.  Light snow chances will also spread east tomorrow, but accumulations will stay low under 1”.

Temperatures will continue a climb upward Wednesday, but that will be relative because highs will still be below normal in many areas East River.  In fact, the whole work week looks below normal in the east, with a much warmer scenario across the west.

Another clipper system will drop south on Friday with more cold and wind with it, mainly East River.  This will be followed by warmer weather during the weekend with highs returning to the 30s and 40s.

There is some potential for snow next week.  A first look at the long-range models is producing a storm system in the plains as early as Tuesday or Wednesday.  It’s still much too early to determine if it will go far enough north to affect KELOLAND, but we’ll keep an eye on it the next few days.
