A Wind Chill Warning is posted for many in KELOLAND and the mercury is already plummeting across our area. Snow fell across much of eastern KELOLAND this morning, with a thin band of light snow at its core. From Mobridge to Huron and Sioux Falls, we averaged roughly two inches. Here at KELO TV we picked up 1.6”. This snow was very powdery and will end up providing less than one tenth of an inch of moisture!
A strong high pressure center of 1040 mb is settling in already over the northern counties. You can see its initial impacts by the clearing on the visible satellite loop. We also expect fierce winds to stay around tonight and drop our feels-like temperature to -30 or worse.
Tomorrow won’t be that much better. Though we will warm somewhat, wind chills should remain subzero for most of the day. Additional snow is possible in the Black Hills with a system lingering around the southwest for much of the day.
A Clipper comes on Tuesday. It looks to hover over the northwest before tracking along the North Dakota border. Snow is possible but it looks like most of the action will be to the north. Still, a couple inches are possible in very isolated areas.
Wednesday will be an in-between day with a slighting warm-up. Another Clipper comes in from the west and will move a little bit faster. Moisture also seems to be lacking in this storm system but light snows are again possible for many. Friday will be noticeably colder for many but then we warm up for the weekend! Highs will stretch above January averages and the sun will come out for a time.
