Light snow continues to blanket much of eastern and southeastern KELOLAND and will continue to do so for much of the morning. Thus far the snow has been extremely fluffy and there is a heavier band from Mobridge to Sioux Falls. That means we could see a couple of inches by the time it’s finished but moisture amounts will be very light. At last check outside, downtown Sioux Falls had less than three quarters of an inch but way less than a tenth of an inch of moisture. The winds finally died down but they did keep Aberdeen from really tanking last night.
Winds will become a factor in the far west later today. We expect winds of 20-30 mph with the potential for snow, favoring the western side of the Hills.
Today will be cold with very little warming. Expect one of the coldest night of winter tonight. There is a Wind Chill Advisory, Watch and Warning out (depending on your location). These alerts are focused East River at this time but we’ll all be bitterly cold tonight.
A strong surface high pressure system is waiting to set up over our north tonight and into tomorrow. Even with daytime sunshine, we will be very cold. Though computer models have over-shot the cold recently, I still think some along the North Dakota border won’t crack 0° tomorrow!
By Tuesday a weak Clipper will come in from the northwest. Moisture really seems to be lacking with this round but light snow is possible. Thickening clouds are the more likely scenario for most of South Dakota. We will enjoy a warming trend through Thursday when another system comes in from the west. Again, another round of light snow is possible, mainly in the west. This will chill us down for Friday and Saturday.
