NSU Band Headed To Inaugural Parade

January 18, 2013, 6:00 PM by Erich Schaffhauser

NSU Band Headed To Inaugural Parade
ABERDEEN, SD -

Northern State University's marching band is Washington, D.C. bound to play for and salute the President.

A committee chose the South Dakota band to march on Monday in the President's Inaugural Parade. And students have been anxiously preparing since.

"Yes, I'm very excited to be going," Amy Wietgrefe said.

Wietgrefe is one of the band's drum majors. She'll get to salute the President as the students pass him.

The band only found out a month ago that it would be playing in the parade. Since students were gone for Christmas break, time to practice has been cut even shorter.

"So it's been absolutely fast and furious and kids have responded great to it," NSU Director of Bands Boyd Perkins said.

Perkins traveled with the Marching Wolves to the 2005 inaugural parade for George W. Bush. He's glad students in this year's band have the chance to take in that experience too.

"It's just a thrill to be able to take our students and represent Northern State and the state of South Dakota in Washington, D.C." Perkins said.

More than 100 people will participate, so just as many have been spending extra time practicing and fundraising.

"Everyone's very excited. A little bit nervous about coming back Tuesday at six in the morning and going to classes but I think the trip will be really worth it," Wietgrefe said.

The band will board a bus and drive to the Twin Cities Friday night. From there, they'll fly out east. The group still hopes to raise between $30,000 and $40,000 to cover expenses.
