Doctors Seeing More Infants With RSV

January 17, 2013, 11:59 AM by Casey Wonnenberg

Doctors Seeing More Infants With RSV

The country has been focused on fighting the flu, but another virus is making its way into people's home.

Every year RSV puts more than 120,000 babies in the hospital and causes more than 200 deaths. The infection attacks the lungs and usually affects babies under a year old.
"In newborns, we'll see them actually stop breathing and often times that can be the first symptom of RSV," Dr. Michelle Moss said.

Most children get RSV by age two and have relatively mild symptoms resembling a cold.  But in small percentage of babies, the tiny airways of the lungs can get so inflamed the virus becomes life-threatening.

Symptoms parents should watch for include a fever and runny nose.  If your child is having difficulty breathing, you should take your child to the doctor right away.

We'll talk with a doctor about the number of cases in the area and have more information on what parents should watch for, tonight on KELOLAND News.
