SD Police Chiefs Advise Governor On School Safety

SD Police Chiefs Advise Governor On School Safety
FORT PIERRE, SD -

Police chiefs from around South Dakota say school buildings should be made more secure to prevent mass shootings like the one in Newtown, Connecticut.

In a meeting with Gov. Dennis Daugaard, the chiefs also said improvements are needed to help them deal with mentally ill people who pose threats because they have guns.

Daugaard intended to talk Wednesday to the South Dakota Police Chiefs Association about a plan to cut prison costs by treating more offenders outside prison walls. But he instead asked the two dozen police chiefs for their thoughts on gun control and school safety.

Daugaard says he hasn't decided yet what stand he will take on gun control or school safety in this year's session of the South Dakota Legislature.
