Duck Killings In Question In Aberdeen City Park

January 16, 2013, 11:50 AM

ABERDEEN, SD -

A wild animal might have killed tame ducks at an Aberdeen city park that authorities initially thought had been shot.

Five ducks were found dead last Thursday, and police said they had been shot. Wylie Park Manager Dan Pirlet says another dead duck was found over the weekend with a hole in its head, but part of its brain had been eaten. That leads him to believe a mink might have killed the ducks, though he isn't sure.

Pirlet says minks that attack ducks tend to go for the head, and they leave wounds that could make it look like the birds had been shot. He says park workers haven't found a mink, but the animals have been trapped in the park in past years.
