Storm Center Update - Friday PM

January 11, 2013, 2:50 PM by Scot Mundt

The snow in western South Dakota will continue to expand and cover more of central, north central, and northeast South Dakota as the evening and night go on.  Snow will be heavy at times and combine with strong northwest winds to help reduce visibilities to a quarter mile or less.  Use caution when spending time outdoors this evening and tonight in western, central, and northeast KELOLAND.  Snow amounts will be heaviest in western South Dakota (Rapid City and the Hills) with four to eight inches likely by Saturday evening.  Amounts of four to eight will also be possible in north central South Dakota (Mobridge).  Amounts will quickly drop off in central and eastern KELOLAND with three to six inches possible in Aberdeen to just to the north of Pierre.  One to three inches will be possible from Watertown to Huron and south.  Much of southeast KELOLAND will miss out on the snow; this will be from near Mitchell to Pipestone and south.  Temperatures will eventually fall to the single digits in many locations.

Lingering light snow showers will be possible early tomorrow morning, but additional amounts will stay light.  The best chance for the additional snow will be in northeast KELOLAND.  Temperatures will be cold with highs only in the single digits and teens.  The cold air will last through the rest of the weekend, but a slow warm-up is in the works for next week.
