Wolters Still On Wooden And Cousy Award Lists

Wolters Still On Wooden And Cousy Award Lists
BROOKINGS, SD -

On the same day that South Dakota State honored Nate Wolters for being the school’s all-time leading scorer with a ball presentation from Jackrabbit great Mark Tetzlaff, the senior point guard also learned that his name remains on the watch lists for two of college basketball’s most prestigious awards.

The Los Angeles Athletic Club announced The John R. Wooden Award Midseason Top 25 on Thursday, a list that includes Wolters among the 25 names. The list, Selected by the Wooden Award National Advisory Board, includes 25 student-athletes who, based on their performances in November, December, and the beginning of January, are the frontrunners for college basketball’s most prestigious honor.

Also on Thursday, The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced the 20 watch list finalists for the 2013 Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award. The annual honor, named for Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtic Bob Cousy, recognizes the top point guards in men’s college basketball. An original list of 80 candidates was trimmed down by a nationally based committee to the list of 20.

“Well we’re super proud of him. Most of the accolades he’s getting are well-deserved, and he’s worked hard for them,” head coach Scott Nagy said. “He says he doesn’t care, he has to a little bit, but it isn’t what drives him. What drives him is that he loves to play and he loves to compete. He’s a special player, without question.”

The Jackrabbits return to action on Saturday against Fort Wayne in Frost Arena at 4 p.m.
