One person is dead and four others are in critical condition after a car crashed into a tree Thursday night. Sioux Falls police and Sioux Falls Fire Rescue were called to the scene on West Oak Street near South Farris Avenue around 10 p.m. Five people were in the car at the time.
Our KELOLAND News crew that was on the scene, which is southwest of 26th Street and Western Avenue, says 2005 silver Mercury Montego was nearly unrecognizable.
All five passengers were transported to local hospitals for emergency treatment: two with life-threatening injuries, three with serious injuries. Police say the driver died shortly after arriving at the hospital. The others are still in the hospital.
The initial investigation shows that both speed and alcohol were factors in the crash. No one in the car was wearing their seatbelt.
Names have not been released as the investigation is still ongoing.
Sioux Falls Police hold a daily briefing to give updates on crime in the city. KELOLAND News will stream that live at 10:30 a.m. and we hope to get more details on the crash.
