Storm Center Update - Thursday PM

January 10, 2013, 3:06 PM by Scot Mundt

On and off rain showers will continue to move through southeast KELOLAND this evening and tonight.  Temperatures in some areas will be close to freezing, so pockets of freezing rain and freezing drizzle will be possible.  The best chance for freezing rain and freezing drizzle will be in northeast KELOLAND during the overnight, mainly north of Highway 14.

Colder air will move west to east through KELOLAND on Friday.  Along with the colder air, snow will develop in western South Dakota and move into central and north central South Dakota by the afternoon and finally in the northeast after 3:00.  Snow will be heavy at times in western KELOLAND and it will combine with strong northwest winds to give way to reduced visibilities and dangerous driving conditions.  The heaviest snow bands will set up from western South Dakota to north central South Dakota.  Amounts of four to eight inches will be possible for Rapid City, Mobridge, and the Sisseton Hills.  A narrow band of three to six inches will set up from Pine Ridge to the northeast.  The three to six inches will include places such as Pine Ridge, Pierre, Aberdeen, and Webster.  One to three inches will be common in south central and east central South Dakota.  The one to three inch amounts will include Winner, Chamberlain, Huron, Brookings and Marshall.  Watertown will receive around three to four inches.  Good luck measuring the snow, as strong winds will cause blowing and drifting.  Use caution when outdoors when the snow flies.

Southeast KELOLAND will most likely skip out on the snow on Friday, but a few snow showers will be possible Friday night and Saturday morning.

Cold air will take hold of KELOLAND for the weekend with highs in the single digits and teens.
