Storm Center Update - Wednesday PM

January 9, 2013, 2:48 PM by Scot Mundt

Clear skies will continue for much of KELOLAND this evening and tonight.  South winds will allow temperatures to fall close to our average highs for this time of year, expect numbers in the twenties by sunrise.

Thursday will start with sunshine for a lot of us in KELOLAND, but clouds will quickly move in from the south and blanket much of eastern South Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa.  This will eventually lead to scattered light rain showers in the late afternoon.  Northeast, central, and western South Dakota will stay dry.  Highs on Thursday will range from near fifty in western South Dakota to the middle thirties in the east.

For those receiving the rain, temperatures will have to be watched after sunset.  That’s when I expect some areas to fall below freezing to allow for a chance at freezing rain and freezing drizzle.  Some of the freezing rain/drizzle will last into the overnight and move north into northeast South Dakota and western Minnesota.  Friday morning can be a slick commute for a lot in eastern KELOLAND.

Colder air moves in on Friday and so does a new round of snow.  As snow develops, winds will increase from the northwest at twenty to thirty miles per hour.  Things will get messy as the day (Friday) goes on in western, central, and north central South Dakota.  Numerous Winter Storm Watches are already posted for Friday and Friday night in western, central, and northeast South Dakota.  I’m not about to get too fancy with the amounts of snow that day, but three to six inches will be possible in the watch area.

Much colder air will filter in behind this system.  This means highs for the weekend will be in the single digits and teens in eastern KELOLAND to the teens and twenties in western and central South Dakota.  The cold air will last into next week with a slow warm-up expected by midweek.
