Speed And Alcohol Factors In Crash

January 7, 2013, 6:00 PM by Don Jorgensen

Speed And Alcohol Factors In Crash
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Police say speed and alcohol played a factor in a fiery weekend crash in southern Sioux Falls.

It happened just after 1:30 Sunday morning after two SUVs collided at the intersection of Cook Road and Cliff Avenue, which is near Lincoln High School.

Now one of the drivers could be facing serious charges.

No names are being released at this time, but authorities say the victim in this crash is a 40-year-old woman from Butte, Montana.

She was traveling north on Cliff Avenue and was attempting to make a left turn onto Cook Road when she was broadsided by a 30-year-old Sioux Falls woman who police say was traveling 70 miles per hour when the two collided.

"Anytime you have a car traveling that fast, it's a little more difficult to estimate their speed.  I'm guessing if she would have known it was going that fast, she probably would have waited," Sioux Falls Police public information officer Sam Clemens said.

One of the SUVs hit a power pole and burst into flames. When police arrived on the scene, they found the 40-year-old woman on the ground with burns to her arms and stomach.

The suspect is suffering from several injuries, including a broken pelvis and leg.

"She hasn't been charged with anything yet.  The charges will most likely happen when she's released from the hospital, " Clemens said.

And those charges could be severe.

"The suspect had been drinking alcohol; I don't know to what extent so we could be looking at DWI, vehicular battery, reckless driving.  There are quite a few charges that could apply here," Clemens said.

Both the victim and suspect remain in the hospital.
