Typical January Temps

January 3, 2013, 5:27 PM by Scot Mundt

Typical January Temps

Thursday's highs remained below average as many locations struggled out of the teens.  To have temperatures this cold isn't uncommon; after all it is January in KELOLAND.

Many of us are in the midst of the coldest time of year. Sioux Falls average high is 26 degrees with an average low of seven degrees. Aberdeen goes from 21 degrees to one degree, while Pierre's averages are29 degrees to a low of ten degrees. Rapid City stays relatively warm with highs and lows of 37 and 13.

Record cold this month ranges from -27 degrees in Rapid City to -46 in Aberdeen, but with above average temps knocking on the doorstep the next couple of days that's something we don't need to worry about.

We've gained almost six minutes of daylight since the first day of winter and we'll start to gain more than a minute a day starting this weekend. The extra sunshine will help the averages slowly warm up as we near the end of the month.
