Storm Center Update-Tuesday AM

January 1, 2013, 7:10 AM by Brian Karstens

It’s a quiet start on this New Year’s Day with temperatures climbing back into the teens in the east this afternoon with upper 20s to near 30 in Rapid City.  The wind won’t be too strong today either, so travel weather looks fine with skies partly cloudy in most areas.

Light snow will develop across the west tonight and spread east during the overnight.  This light snow will spread toward Sioux Falls during the morning.  While the accumulation of snow won’t be heavy, an inch or less can be expected in most areas.  The heaviest snow will be located in the northern Black Hills where 3-5” can be expected.  Winds will increase with this clipper system and that will create areas of blowing snow.  The strongest winds will be around Rapid City with NW winds of 25-45mph.  Sioux Falls will be in the 15-20mph range much of the day, with Aberdeen and Pierre in between at 15-30mph.  Again, expect areas of blowing snow, but no advisories have been posted at this time.  I would stay tuned to the latest forecasts for more information later today, especially for West River folks.

Thursday is looking colder, but warmer weather will be heading our way by the weekend.  Highs by Sunday could be in the 30s in the east, with mid 40s likely in Rapid City.  This could be the start of a January thaw with at least 2 or 3 days looking mild next week in the 30s and 40s.
