SD's Oldest Car Dealership Wraps Up 105th Year

December 31, 2012, 6:50 AM

PIERRE, SD -

The oldest car dealership in South Dakota is wrapping up its 105th year in business.

Wegner Auto Co. in Pierre is owned by the same family as when it opened in 1907. Jim Wegner says the company has lasted so long because it's diversified and expanded to meet the various challenges of the last century.

Henry Wegner traveled up the Missouri River in the 1900s to see the newly established permanent state capital of Pierre. He fell in love with the area and founded a livery next to a hotel. After that, he started fixing vehicles.

The business has gone on to employee the next three generations of Wegners.

Jim Wegner says the company plans to stay put but might remodel soon.
