Firework Sales Open In South Dakota On Friday

Firework Sales Open In South Dakota On Friday
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

This is the second year people in South Dakota are able to purchase fireworks for New Years, but there are some things you may want to keep in mind before purchasing.

Firework stands across the state will open their doors to customers on Friday, but there are a few firework safety tips you may want to keep in mind this holiday weekend.  For the second year in a row, a tradition that is usually only seen in the blistering hot month of July is now a part of the freezing cold month of December.

"Fireworks.  It's a form of entertainment, and it's nice for New Years, for families to have an alternative form of entertainment," owner of Pyro City Fireworks Kevin Lorenzen said.

The sales of fireworks for New Years became legal in South Dakota last year. Firework stands across KELOLAND will open their doors to customers and can be open through New Years Day.

"Last year, we saw a good trickle of people that were very excited about the new law, but a big difference compared to the Fourth of July season. This time of year people are just looking for those one or two pieces to light up the sky," Lorenzen said.

Although it may seem like lighting the night sky with fireworks may seem safer at this time of year because of snow on the ground, Lorenzen wants you to remember firework safety is just as important now as in July.

"Lighting off fireworks in the middle of winter is no different than lighting them off in the summer.  Make sure you have permission, and you're safe, and in a reasonable place to shoot them," Lorenzen said.

Also remember, even though the ground around you may be wet, your clothes can start on fire just as easily as the grass can in July. Lorenzen also wants you to be aware of the local laws, which vary from city to city.

"Fireworks are very safe as long as they are used as intended," Lorenzen said.

Lorenzen says fireworks are an alternative form of entertainment that is great for families on New Years but to always use fireworks cautiously.

It is illegal to light fireworks off within city limits so wherever you do chose to light them off, make sure it is out of city limits.
