The coldest air of the season has arrived just in time for Christmas.
Temperatures started cold on Christmas morning and they stayed cold during the afternoon. Highs were about 15 to 20 degrees below average.
Many in KELOLAND had a hard time getting out of the single digits Tuesday afternoon, but it wasn't anywhere near the coldest Christmas on record. To be the coldest Christmas on record, we would have to stay below zero.
The coldest high temperature on Christmas in Sioux Falls and Aberdeen is -10. Pierre is -6 and Rapid City is -4.
As long as Sioux Falls stays in the single digits, cold air will most likely rank in the top ten for coldest afternoon highs on Christmas Day.
Temperatures will slowly warm toward the weekend, but many locations will remain below average.
