Holiday Weekend Weather Conditions

December 21, 2012, 5:20 PM by Ben Cathey

Holiday Weekend Weather Conditions

As expected, a large winter storm plowed through the nation's midsection this week. The bulk of the snow stayed just to our south. But that didn't help the thousands of travelers who were stranded at truck stops or airports.

Depending where your Grandmother lives, you may want to consider taking a sleigh to make it in time for Christmas. Interstate 80 took the brunt of the storm.  From Southern Wyoming, east to Omaha and Des Moines, much of this artery remains dangerous for travel.  Once you get southeast of Spencer, almost all of Iowa has icy roads. But they'll start to improve this weekend.

More than a thousand flights have been canceled so far, even in dry areas without inclement weather. Chicago's O'Hare airport came to a crawl after seeing very little snow before this week. But traffic continues to move in and out of Sioux Falls.

Our regional weather will calm heading into the weekend. If you start driving Saturday, expect plentiful sunshine, but also glare on the roads.

A smaller storm will track through North Dakota this weekend before closing in on Aberdeen on Monday.

No matter where you're headed, be sure to pack the StormTracker app, so you can take the forecast wherever you go.
