  • Stocks gained ground today. The Dow rose 116 points to 13,351, a gain of 0.9 percent. The S&P added 16 points, while the Nasdaq surged 44 points.
  • Nielsen, the leading company behind television ratings, says it has agreed to buy Arbitron. The deal valued at nearly $1.3 billion dollars will allow it to expand into measurement of radio audiences.
  • The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission says retailer Dillard's is paying $2 million to settle charges that it improperly required workers reveal confidential medical information. The settlement resolves a four-year-old class action lawsuit that charged Dillard's with violating the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • The price of crude settled higher on hopes that leaders in Washington can agree to head off the "fiscal cliff". Benchmark crude finished up 73 cents at $87.93 in New York.
  • Air Canada, that country's largest airline, is hoping to recapture lost business by launching a new low-cost carrier named "Rouge".  It will begin flying in July from Toronto to Venice, Italy, and Edinburgh, Scotland, and will also serve Athens from Toronto and Montreal.
