Storm Center Update - Friday PM

December 14, 2012, 2:57 PM by Ben Cathey

There is plenty of warmth in the southern half of KELOLAND but in the Northeast, we’ve been stuck with cold temperatures.
The big weather story arrives starting later tonight.  The storm arrives from the southwest and will first move through Nebraska.  Rain should be starting in Sioux Falls close to the midnight hour.  Some light wintry mix will likely form on the northwest edge of the storm.  This is most likely in the Huron and Mitchell area.  That could follow into Watertown and Brookings.  There is also a Winter Weather Advisory in place for much of NE KELOLAND from 3 a.m. to 3 p.m. for freezing rain and snow.
The bulk of the storm looks to be rain, especially before noon tomorrow.  Rain totals could actually be healthy, with some getting half an inch.  One thing we need for snow is cold air.  That will arrive later tomorrow with northwest winds.  This could turn the west part of the storm into snow.  During the afternoon, the system will race off towards Minnesota and Iowa.  Rain/snow mix could linger into the late evening tomorrow.
Sunday looks to be on the cold side.  We will remain mostly dry in South Dakota until next Wednesday.
This will mostly impact the areas West River.  Snow amounts could be on the heavier side but we’ll talk more about this system once we get through the weekend.
