KELO TV Donates $7,700 To Feeding SD

KELO TV Donates $7,700 To Feeding SD
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

The late South Dakota Senator George McGovern long had a passion for feeding the hungry. Even in death, his mission lives on thanks to you our viewers.

On Wednesday, KELOLAND TV General Manager Jay Huizenga presented a check for more than $7,700 to the organization Feeding South Dakota.

The money was raised through DVD sales. After McGovern died earlier this year, KELO TV sold DVD copies of all of our news coverage of McGovern's death, funeral, stories about him and his political career and his mission to feed the hungry.

We sold well over 300 copies.

"I think that's what attracted people to this DVD, it's really more about having access to the entire story of George McGovern's life," Feeding South Dakota director Matt Gassen said.

Gassen says it shows the impact McGovern had on our state, but it also shows how much people care about McGovern's legacy.

"The two things he did that were most significant, I think are far as leaving a legacy was his time he spent as a World War Two veteran and lastly the years he spent fighting hunger domestically and globally," Gassen said.

And with the holidays upon us, the check couldn't have come at a better time.

"Each season of the year brings different challenges to families that are struggling to make ends meet and this time of year is no different and you add in that piece of the holidays when families are really wanting to do the best that they can do to provide a good holiday experience for their family," Gassen said. "So, these dollars are going to come in very handy right now to provide food to their families we are dealing with."

Gassen says KELO TV's donation will provide well over 30,000 meals to needy families.
