Storm Center Update-Wednesday AM

December 12, 2012, 6:23 AM by Brian Karstens

A warmer day is forecast for much of KELOLAND, but the developing south wind is creating some blowing snow, mainly northeast of Sioux Falls.  A winter weather advisory has been posted for Clear Lake, Milbank, and Sisseton for areas of blowing snow.  Highs today will range from 30 in Aberdeen to around 44 in Rapid City.  Valentine could be close to 50 later today.

A cold front will move into the northeast tonight with colder temperatures returning to colder readings tomorrow.  In fact, Aberdeen will struggle to hit 20 in the afternoon.  The temperature trend will turn around by Friday ahead of the next storm system.

It looks like rain and snow will develop across parts of southeast KELOLAND late Friday night and Saturday.  This will be a warmer storm system, so there will be a rain component.  The question remains exactly how cold surface temperatures will be once the precipitation arrives.  It looks like we’ll be close to freezing around Sioux Falls, so all modes of precipitation will be possible.  We are also noticing more of the data shifting the storm farther north into KELOLAND.

If this trend continues, some decent precipitation amounts could fall over the driest areas of southeast SD and NW IA.  We’ll assume the heaviest will be to our south right now, but I want to watch the trends today.  Again, rain will be a big part of this system.  The best chance of accumulating snow may be in SW MN.  We’ll have more on this system later today.
