Domestic Abuse Resources in South Dakota

December 3, 2012, 6:06 PM by Stephanie Gregory

Domestic Abuse Resources in South Dakota

Being in an abusive relationship is scary and many victims don't know where to turn. There are a number of different resources in Sioux Falls ready to help those who find themselves a victim of domestic abuse.

"The statistics out there say one in four women are impacted by domestic violence, and that statistic is nation wide," Patty Brooks with the Compass Center said.

Women and children are usually affected the most. And whether it comes in the form of physical, sexual or emotional abuse, the Compass Center offers an array of help for victims.

"We offer free counseling, either one on one counseling for a year or two years, depending on their needs," Brooks said.

There are even places to go if you need help in the middle of the night. The Children's Inn offers everything from a warm meal to a place to stay.

"We've seen as many as 64 people in our shelter with us, which really doubles our capacity," Amy Carter, the Operations Director with Children's Inn said.

Carter says if you need help, just call. The Children’s Inn will provide everything from a cab ride to safety to help finding legal services.

"We don't want there to be any obstacles getting someone the help they need," Carter said.

As for the holiday season, it may seem like the rise in domestic violence cases goes up. However, both Children's Inn and the Compass Center say there is no way of knowing when you may need their services.

"It's hard to trend, but we certainly see spurts here and there," Carter said.

“The people we do see right now this time of year, they are relatively domestic violence to the seasonally issues that come up. Weather it’s financial, meeting with families and stress and pressures of Christmas gift buying," Brooks said.

If you'd like more information on the Children's Inn, you can call 605-338-4880. And if you'd like to learn more about the Compass Center, you can call 605-339-0116.
