December Outlook

November 30, 2012, 6:35 PM by Ben Cathey

December Outlook

As we head into December this weekend, many begin putting holiday decorations up as the mercury goes down.

Even Rapid City, one of our warmest cities, finishes the month with an average high of 36. Sioux Falls usually ends the year ten degrees colder.

We'll actually start December off on the warm side. Quite a few high temperature records could fall before the next cold front comes through KELOLAND.

Sioux Falls can expect seven plus December days with lows below zero. Last year that only happened once.

The long-range outlook brings us chillier air later in the month. Still, expect a fairly dry forecast until the New Year. Since 1981, Sioux Falls saw an average of nearly eight inches of snow for the month.

But once that all melts down, that turns into less than three quarters of an inch of moisture. The newest South Dakota crop report shows that the wheat crop is the worst in the nation.
