J&M Country Meats At New Location

November 30, 2012, 10:00 PM by Brady Mallory

J&M Country Meats At New Location
HARRISBURG, SD -

J&M Country Meats is at a new location days after being evicted from its original site.

Jared and Mandee Adrian, who run J&M, were evicted from the original site at a store outside of Harrisburg on November 26. An attorney for the owners of the building and property said the Adrians owe more than $55,000 in unpaid rent.

In an interview on November 27, Jared Adrian told KELOLAND News the company had about 400 deer left to process and that he would be finding a new location.

An employee told KELOLAND News over the phone the new location was, "a mile west and a quarter of a mile south," of the original site. When we arrived we found the sign for J & M Country Meats, right next to Adrian's family business, Adrian Sod Company.

From the road, we could see workers loading boxes.

Adrian said they are not processing right now, but they will be soon and he is in the process of re-applying for a license with the animal industry board.

"The license is granted for the business they're in and the facility they are in and doesn't automatically transfer to a new location," Dr. Dustin Oedekoven State Veterinarian with the Animal Industry Board said.

According to Oedekoven, that means J & M's license to process is now inactive, but he said the a business would not need a license to process wild game legally. Oedekoven said businesses that strictly process wild game are not subject to meat inspection regulations because the meat is brought in by hunters and not sold to them from the business.

"Technically speaking, somebody could do it out of a garage and if you as the hunter were comfortable taking your game to that person for processing, there would be nothing to prevent that from happening," Oedekoven said.

Despite allegations from Country Meats, L.L.C., Adrian said customers are not troubled by his eviction and move because they are very loyal. In fact, he said even had new business since this all began.
