AP Interview: New Tribal President Wants Change

November 26, 2012, 12:22 PM

The newly elected president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe says he's ready to hit the ground running once he's sworn into office next month.

Sixty-five-year-old Bryan Brewer beat out incumbent John Yellow Bird Steele to become president of the tribe, located on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in southwestern South Dakota.

Brewer says people living on the reservation are ready for change and to see improvements. Some of the most pressing issues he's going to work to address include housing shortages, high unemployment, alcoholism and violence.

Brewer says he does not support legalizing alcohol on the reservation at this time because Pine Ridge does not have the infrastructure in place to support the initial uptick in violence associated with legalizing it.

Brewer's inauguration ceremony is set for Dec. 7.
