Apartments For The Young Professional

November 26, 2012, 10:07 PM by Kellee Azar

Apartments For The Young Professional
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Graduating from college and deciding what to do with your life is a huge decision and right of passage for every generation.

But, it's not one that comes without cold feet and unexpected changes. Now a new apartment building is poised to help new young professionals make the move from Mom and Dad's place to their own home.

Moving out can be a big step for any twenty-something.  But moving to a new city and not knowing anyone can be a life changing event. For Liz Funkhouser it was intimidating.

"I really didn't know where to start.  In Peoria, everything is right there and growing up in a town where you don't have to start over ever," Liz Funkhouser said.

If it wasn't for a promotion in her company, Funkhouser may not have made the move.  But with the prospect of a brighter future, she hopped on a plane.

"I came to the airport, wanted to try something new and spread my wings and here I am," Funkhouser said.

Booking the flight is one thing, but finding a place to call home is another. Thanks to a lot of word-of-mouth, Funkhouser found the Villas at Canyon Creek, a new apartment building aimed at pleasing a young professional such as herself.

"The amenities were big for me, like I said, the washer and dryer in the actual apartment.  I was concerned about a garage. I wanted to know about rent, a security deposit, was it pet-friendly or not?  That's something I'm thinking about doing and the qualifications to be a tenant, that was a question too," Funkhouser said.

But most important, for a single 25-year-old living on her own, was safety.

"I did want a secure building, and they have that here with the locked doors and you have to be buzzed up to be let in.  Not just anyone can get in," Funkhouser said.

Amenities including a theatre room and large gym are sticking out to young professionals such as Funkhouser and ultimately helping them make their decision on where they want to live.

"When we started thinking about this project we wanted to offer a lot of amenities, guest suite, community room, large fitness center," Midwest Properties President Jill Madsen said.

Madsen says the upgrades are ones her crews knew would be attractive to young professionals because many twenty-somethings are looking for similar amenities.

"You know, you are trying to find a place that people want, you know.  The young professionals are coming from possibly Mom and Dad's home. They have high expectations, they want nice things and that's what when we were putting this together we thought of them," Madsen said.

And after one tour, Funkhouser could already see herself there.

"When I did the tour and saw the theatre room and the great room I thought, 'hello, Superbowl Party!'  That would be awesome," Funkhouser said.

With construction still underway, the Villas only officially have one of its buildings open but a number of people interested in the new concept for apartment living.

"A lot of people from out of town who are interested in the project moving here sight unseen because, until now, we haven't had a project to show them.  So that's been exciting," Madsen said.

After just living there for two weeks, Funkhouser knows she made the right decision, even amidst all the apprehension.

“I feel wonderful. I was scared to go away from home but it's been wonderful.  The people here are wonderful and have made me feel right at home,” Funkhouser said.

The Villas at Canyon Creek expect to be finished by the end of 2013 at which time they will have 260 units. They are currently taking new tenants.  For more information visit the Midwest Property Services website.
