O'Gorman High School will play 11AAA football next season.
The Knights will join the public schools in Sioux Falls and Rapid City as well as Aberdeen Central, Watertown and Brandon Valley at the new football level. While the Knights were originally placed in AA, Athletic Director and head football coach Steve Kueter says, it wasn't the right fit for the O'Gorman faithful.
"We're not happy about the setup. Basically, what they (SDHSAA) did is they took the top division, cut it in half, put eight into AAA and eight into AA, and we were in AA. So the decision is, do you want to stay there or do you want to move to AAA? The kids really want to move to AAA. There was overwhelming support for that," Kueter said. "These are the teams we play. Washington, Lincoln, and Roosevelt... These are the teams we play all the time at every level at every sport. So we just didn't see a situation where we wouldn't continue doing that."
The new alignment is set to take place next fall and will continue for two years.
Now because O'Gorman is petitioning up, Brandon Valley now has the option to move down to the 11AA football ranks. They'll discuss the topic at a school board meeting next Monday.
