107th Family To Receive Habitat Home
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Habitat For Humanity volunteers build ten new homes every year in the Sioux Falls area.  And Friday, they'll dedicate one of those homes before the family gets to move in.

The past few years have been tough to say the least for Dena Morken and her family. But when Habitat for Humanity stepped in, her dream of owning a home became a reality.

While there's still no grass in the front yard and construction signs are still up, it's a new beginning for a family all thanks to Habitat for Humanity.

"It's hers and she spent 400 hours earning it.  She's taking on a 30-year mortgage to pay for it," Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Sue Olsen said.

Morken and her family are preparing to move into their new home. It's something they helped build since the foundation was laid.

"It's been amazing. I've never done anything like this before. I have never built a house by myself.  Obviously I have learned a lot from the masters, the guys from Habitat, and just learning how the house goes together," Morken said.

But it's more than just putting up walls and a roof; it's been a long time dream for Morken.

"I grew up with my mom we moved around a lot and she bought a house and it means the world to her and now she is a home owner today. I kind of learned that from her that's part of the American dream that everybody should own a home," Morken said.

And now it's Morken's turn to rest easier at night.

"She is now a woman with a home for her son, an investment in real estate, now a member of a community.  And her future is so much brighter and broader and so much more to work with in terms of what she wants to do with her life," Olsen said

Morken agrees and couldn't be more thankful.

"It truly just starts my future, it really does. It's something I have been thinking about since I was a kid," Morken said.

Morken and her family officially move in Friday. While she's excited, she's also thankful for the organization and its volunteers.
