MBK: Augustana Wins Over Black Hills State
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Augustana had five players reach double-digits, led by Cameron McCaffrey who scored 23, in an 89-71 win over Black Hills State University on Wednesday night in Sioux Falls. Augustana improves to 2-0 on the season while Black Hills State falls to 0-2.

Behind McCaffrey's 23 points, freshman Joe Burt finished with 14, knocking down four 3-pointers in the contest. Burt also grabbed a season-high eight rebounds for the Vikings. McCaffrey has scored 20 or more points in a game 20 times in his career.

Daniel Jansen finished with 12 points and six rebounds, Leif Nomeland picked up 11 points and seven boards, and Alex Richter finished with 10 points for Augustana.

The Vikings finished the game shooting 50 percent (27 of 54) from the field, including 9 of 19 from 3-point range. Augustana shot poorly from the free throw line as a team connecting on just 47 percent (9 of 19) of its shots from the charity stripe.

Black Hills State was led offensively by Joey Mitchell and Austin Maag who both scored 17 points. The Yellow Jackets were lights out from 3-point range hitting 10 shots from beyond the arc. Mitchell was 5 of 6 from 3-point range individually.

Augustana and Black Hills State traded points early in the first half with both teams trying to find their rhythm. Jamall Taylor gave Augustana a good jump early hitting a long 3-pointer from the left wing to give the Vikings a 6-5 lead.

Black Hills State used the deep ball to stay in the game. Joey Mitchell hit a 3-pointer with 11:29 left in the half that gave the Yellow Jackets a 17-14 lead, its largest of the half.

Augustana responded with a 6-0 run to take a 20-17 lead with 9:43 to play in the half.

The first half saw four tie scores and 16 lead changes before Augustana was able to take the lead for good with 3:46 left in the half on a 3-pointer by Joe Burt. Burt finished the half with eight points, drilling two 3-pointers.

McCaffrey and Jansen sparked the Vikings to its seven-point halftime lead as both players finished the half with 11 points. McCaffrey was 5 of 6 from the free throw line in the first half for Augustana.

The Vikings took the ball down low to eat away at the Yellow Jackets scoring 22 of its 42 first half points in the paint. Augustana shot 48 percent from the field while Black Hills State was 14 of 30 (46 percent), including 6 of 14 from 3-point range, which kept the Yellow Jackets in the game.

Augustana controlled the boards in the first half grabbing 24 rebounds, including nine offensive boards. Jansen grabbed three offensive rebounds in the first half for the Vikings.

Augustana came out strong in the second half building up a 10 point lead in the first seven minutes.

After a 3-pointer by BHSU's Mitchell, Augustana went on a 13-0 run to take a 21-point lead. The run was aided by back-to-back 3-pointers by Burt and Yuriy Malashenko.

While Augustana shot poorly as a team from the free throw line, McCaffrey was lights out finishing the game 11 of 12 from the charity stripe.

Augustana continues non-conference play on Friday, Nov. 17, night hosting South Dakota School of Mines at 7 p.m.
