Head coach Aaron Johnston announced Wednesday that four high school standouts have signed a National Letter of Intent indicating they plan to enroll at South Dakota State University nextfall and compete for the Jackrabbit women’s basketball team.
Signing Wednesday, the first day of the fall signing period, were:
• Tiffaney Flaata, 6-2, center, Savage, Minn. (Prior Lake High School);
• Clarissa Ober, 6-2, center, Glencoe, Minn. (Glencoe-Silver Lake High School);
• Chynna Stevens, 6-0, forward, Clark, S.D. (Clark-Willow Lake High School), and
• Kerri Young, 6-0, wing, Mitchell, S.D. (Mitchell High School).
Flaata nearly averaged a double-double during her junior season at Prior Lake High School, posting 10.9 points and 9.6 rebounds per game in earning all-South Suburban Conference honors. She also contributed 2.3 steals and 1.5 blocked shots per game. A member of the varsity since ninth grade, Flaata has been selected as a team captain for the 2012-13 season and also has been an academic all-section selection. She has been a member of the Minnesota Metro Stars AAU program.
Ober has been an all-area selection in both basketball and volleyball during a standout prep career at Glencoe-Silver Lake High School. An honorable mention all-state honoree and second-team all-Metro selection by the Minneapolis Star Tribune during her junior season, Ober averaged 14.5 points, 10 rebounds, three blocked shots and three assists per game. She earned all-conference honors both as a sophomore and junior and enters her senior season as the school’s career leader in blocked shots and has already reached the 1,000-point mark. She also has competed for the North Tartan team in AAU competition.
In addition, Ober has been a four-time all-conference and three-time all-area selection in volleyball, while holding the school’s career records for both kills and blocks. She also has lettered in track and field. Her father, Cullen, played basketball for the Jackrabbits from 1987-90.
Stevens enters her senior season at Clark-Willow Lake High School already having eclipsed the 1,000-point mark. A two-time all-state selection, Stevens earned first-team honors as a junior after receiving third-team recognition as a sophomore. She also is a two-time all-state tournament selection.
Stevens also has earned all-conference honors in volleyball and was a member of three consecutive state championship golf teams from seventh through ninth grades. Individually, she turned in three top-10 finishes at the state golf meet.
Young has been a three-time Class AA all-state selection at Mitchell High School, earning second team honors as a freshman and first-team recognition during her sophomore and junior seasons. In leading Mitchell to the 2012 state title, Young averaged 19.3 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. Sheenters her senior season with 1,345 career points.
An accomplished student, Young is a member of the National Honor Society and has been a recipient of both the Governor’s Leadership Award and the South Dakota 4-H Hometown Heroes of Character Award. At SDSU, she will join her brothers, Brett and Nick, who have both been members of the Jackrabbit baseball team.
The South Dakota State University women’s basketball team has made four consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament by virtue of winning the Summit League postseason championship. The Jackrabbits also have won three Summit League regular season titles in the last five years, including the 2011-12 season.
