A Sioux Falls man who shot and killed his neighbor during a dispute in October 2011 is headed to prison for 80 years.
Judge Brad Zell handed down the sentence to 30-year-old Peter Mayen Tuesday afternoon. Mayen pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter back in September for the killing.
Mayen shot 51-year-old Bruce Walters more than a year ago in a mobile-home park near the intersection of Rice Street and Cliff Avenue. The two men were neighbors and had several disputes leading up to the fatal shooting. Walters had even set up surveillance cameras outside his home.
Minnehaha County State’s Attorney Aaron McGowan believes the sentence was ‘very appropriate.’
Mayen won’t be parole eligible until he is at least 70 years old.
