Voter Numbers Steady For 2012 Election

November 6, 2012, 12:17 PM by Ben Dunsmoor

Voter Numbers Steady For 2012 Election
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Voters across the country have some big decisions to make Tuesday. Beside the presidential race, people in South Dakota are voting for state and local races as well as ballot issues.

Voting has been steady across Sioux Falls and much of South Dakota.

The Sioux Falls School District's Instructional Planning Center has voters from three districts filing in to cast ballots.  Several people arrived to vote over the noon hour.  We've also been received several photos that are on our KELOLAND Facebook page of people standing in line when polls opened at 7 a.m. Tuesday morning.  Those lines subsided after the morning rush.

But the Secretary of State expects a 70 percent voter turnout.  That's not necessarily a record as the record for voter turn out was 81 percent in 1968.  The highest recent voter turnout was in the 2004 election between Tom Daschle and Senator John Thune and when America voted for President George W. Bush.  It had a 79 percent voter turnout.

A 70 percent voter turnout is about average for the past five presidential elections.

Voters have a lot of decisions to make including President, US House, several South Dakota Legislative candidates and seven ballot measures.

Become an educated voter for the 2012 election by going to the Campaign 2012 section of KELOLAND.com.  That’s where you’ll find information about the presidential election, South Dakota races and where to vote.

Then Tuesday night, get team reports on the 2012 election results on KELOLAND News and the 2012 Election page of KELOLAND.com
