This is the time of year people are more likely to pack on the pounds. As the weather gets cooler, it can be more difficult to get physical activity outside.
But people are also more likely to crave those warm, comfort foods with more carbohydrates and calories.
Annette Moyer hits the gym five days a week with the help of her personal trainer.
"She kind of keeps me in line and I try to watch it," Moyer said.
Because this fall, Moyer has a fitness goal.
"Not to gain five pounds. If I can just maintain, I'll be happy," Moyer said.
Moyer's trainer says the key is to do some physical activity every day. That might be easiest to find a gym as the weather gets colder.
"If you're just exercising outside, you're probably not doing a lot of strength training type of things. So I would say if you've been running or walking outside all summer and are ready to come inside, it's time to start focusing on strength training again," Avera Personal Trainer Andrea Sprik said.
Sprik says mixing strength training in with your cardio will help you lose or maintain your weight.
"But kind of ease into it. Just don't go back crazy like you did four months ago or whatever and think you can do the same thing. If you've been doing stuff outside, you probably have to back off a little bit," Sprik said.
And believe it or not, physical activity can help with those fall food cravings.
"It does curb your cravings. But you are doing something good for yourself, so hopefully when you go home and see that bowl of candy, you will be like, 'I just had a great two-hour workout. I don't need that today,'" Sprik said.
Sprik says you also don't necessarily need a gym, as long as you stay motivated.
"There are so many things you can do at home these days. You can look online for workouts you can do at home, or if you have a trainer and are going to be traveling, ask your trainer to set you up with a program that uses bands or your body, like pushups and squats. So it's all stuff you can do at home," Sprik said.
And that's advice Moyer hopes to use as we head into the holiday season.
"It's harder at Christmas than Thanksgiving because this time of year you can still get outside," Moyer said.
Sprik says if you plan to exercise outside, make sure you dress in layers as the weather gets cooler. Also, it's a good idea to spend a little more time stretching.
