Lakota Runners Competing In NYC Marathon Sunday

November 2, 2012, 11:46 AM

SIOUX FALLS, SD -

A group of five runners from Native American tribes in South Dakota are competing in the New York City Marathon on Sunday to raise awareness about the reservations and help inspire youth.

The runners all are members of Lakota tribes and are sponsored by the nonprofit organization ONE Spirit. The runners from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation are Alex Wilson, Amanda Carlow, Nupa White Plume and Kelsey Good Lance. Jeff Turning Heart Jr. grew up on the Cheyenne River Reservation and now lives in Washburn, N.D.

The runners have been training for several months for the marathon. Several of them have competed in half marathons.

Twenty-four-year-old Wilson says running allows him to get away from the problems of the reservation, including alcoholism and suicide, and he hopes to inspire others.
