MN Secretary Of State: Still Time To Vote

October 31, 2012, 10:10 PM by Kelly Bartnick

MN Secretary Of State: Still Time To Vote
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Minnesota’s Secretary of State Mark Ritchie says more than 3 million voters will cast ballots in the state’s general election next Tuesday.

He expects voter turnout to hover around its traditional number of 78 percent. But Ritchie says the state’s recent redistricting means changes too.

“The fact of redistricting putting every single House and Senate seat in the ballot, the fact there is change at the county level,” Ritchie said.

Voters are less excited about the 2012 general election than they were in 2008, but what the state lacks in motivation on the national front could be made up as voters turn out to weigh in on controversial constitutional provisions including marriage and voter ID amendments.

“These have been subject of great debate, lots of controversy, lots of people weighing in, lots of money spent. There's a lot of information available, folks can go see so they can study the issues for themselves,” Ritchie said.

And your biggest learning tool before hitting the ballot box is the Minnesota Secretary of State website. In a redistricting year, it tells you if your polling place has moved and which candidates make up local races. You'll even find a sample ballot and links to the state's amendments.

Ritchie says if you can't make it on Election Day, there's still time to vote absentee too.

“You do that at a city clerk or a county auditor's office. Hours on Saturday are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and they're open late next Monday,” Ritchie said.

Minnesota also has same day registration at your polling place if you wait until the last minute.
