Wednesday Evening Business Brief

October 31, 2012, 5:45 PM

Wednesday Evening Business Brief

Stocks were mixed as Wall Street resumed trading after the two-day shutdown caused by Superstorm Sandy. The Dow fell nearly 11 points to 13,097. The S&P rose a fraction, while the Nasdaq slipped 11 points.

  • Along with the resumption of stock trading, two of New York's major airports, Kennedy and Newark Liberty, resumed operations.  Most damaged by the storm and with water still on its runways, New York's LaGuardia remains closed.
  • Federal regulators say that wireless networks are slowly coming back to life after Hurricane Sandy. About 1 in 5 cell towers were still out of service today in the storm-hit area stretching from Virginia to Massachusetts, but that is better than yesterday.
  • Billionaire investor Carl Icahn has seized on Netflix's recent troubles to take a 10 percent stake in the Internet video service. Just the disclosure about Icahn's stake in Netflix prompted the stock price to rise 14 percent.
  • About 3.6 million tax returns from as far back as 1998 have been hacked in South Carolina. Experts say it may be the largest cyber-attack against a state tax department in the nation's history.
