The Southwest Minnesota State University volleyball team is ranked third in the first NCAA Division II Central Region rankings released Wednesday afternoon by the NCAA national committee.
The Mustangs are 23-1 this season and lead the Northern Sun IntercollegiateConference with a 15-1 record. SMSU, which is ranked No. 1 in this week’s AVCA Top 25 poll, has a 20-1 record versus teams in the NCAA Central Region.
SMSU is one of six NSIC schools to appear in the regional rankings with No. 1 Concordia-St. Paul, No. 5 Minnesota Duluth, No. 8 Wayne State, No. 9 Minnesota State and No. 10 Augustana. The Mid-America Athletic Association (MIAA) has four teams ranked this week with No. 2 Central Missouri, No. 4 Washburn (Kan.), No. 6 Truman State (Mo.) and No. 7 Nebraska-Kearney.
The top eight teams in the 40-team region will advance to the NCAA region tournament on Nov. 29-Dec. 2. Automatic bids are granted to the winners of the NSIC and MIAA postseason tournaments, with the remaining six spots awarded on an at-large basis. The newly formed Great American Conference (GAC) is also in the region, but is not awarded an automatic bid for this season.
Southwest Minnesota State will continue action tomorrow at Wayne State starting at 7 p.m., before returning home on Saturday with a 4 p.m. match versus Augustana.
