River Greenway Project Right On Schedule

October 29, 2012, 6:45 AM by Austin Hoffman

River Greenway Project Right On Schedule
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

It's a Sioux Falls project that's been in the works for around seven years and it's now closing in on its final stages.

The city of Sioux Falls broke down the River Greenway Project into two phases. Construction crews finished Phase One last June and now Phase Two is right on schedule.

"We're doing great. We’re definitely on schedule, maybe even a little bit ahead," Sioux Falls Park Development Specialist Tory Miedema said.

Only a few years ago the river banks were nothing more than rocks and weeds. Now, it's all changing. The project is meant to create an urban environment along the Big Sioux River in downtown Sioux Falls. And while this summer's weather wasn't good for growing, it was great for construction.

"We didn't have any flooding or anything like that. It really helped out the project. Also, we just haven't lost any days so yeah, were just speeding right along. We’ve got all the work done next to the river and actually have the widened bike trial completed," Miedema said.

Miedema says winter will eventually shut down construction but for now, they're not too worried about it.

"Once it starts freezing we can’t do a lot of the flat work that were going to have to do, but right now it’s really not hurting us. We’re building the ramp down from 8th Street down to the Greenway and a lot of that stuff can be blanketed too if it does start getting a little bit colder. So, well, keep on going well into the winter," Miedema said.

And even though winter will eventually close its grip on the project, this summer really couldn't have been any better.

"You know the bedrock has been where we thought its going to be so that really helped with the progress.  And we really haven't ran into anything that we were not expecting to.  So it's been a really smooth project." Miedema said.

The city expects to have the project completed in June of next year but the last month will most likely be landscaping and dirt work.
