District 25 Legislative Race Heats Up

October 28, 2012, 9:55 PM by Jenna Petrak

District 25 Legislative Race Heats Up

It's crunch time for two men vying for one seat, South Dakota’s District 25 Senate seat. Republican incumbent Tim Rave isn't ready to give it up and democratic challenger Dan Ahlers, who held the seat two years ago, wants it back.

And with nine days until the 2012 election, this high profile race is heating up. And that's something both men know all too well.

"It was a pretty huge race the last time too when we ran against each other the last time, so it's kind of part two, I call it," Rave said.

While both men have their political differences, they're hitting the campaign trail in the same manner.

"Well I've been getting out for the last six weeks and knocking on doors and trying to talk to as many people as I can," Ahlers said.

"Going out and knocking on doors and saying hi and asking if they'd vote for you," Rave said.

And they're covering a big area. District 25 includes eastern Sioux Falls, the Brandon Valley area and down into Baltic. But both candidates have enlisted help to get their message out.

For Rave, he spends his Sunday afternoon knocking on doors in Dell Rapids with his son Mitch. And Ahlers has the help of Democratic party chairman Ben Nesselhuf when he visited an eastern Sioux Falls neighborhood.

And both men know that every vote counts.

"I can think back throughout my political career, whether it's been student government or elections. One seems to be the magic number for me. I remember losing my first election by one vote and I lost my last election by one percent," Ahlers said.

And on November 6, neither man is prepared to go home the loser.
