The South Dakota State Historical Society is showing film footage of President John F. Kennedy's visit to the dedication ceremony of the Oahe Dam in 1962 Society at the Cultural Heritage Center on Sunday.
The film footage features audio recording of President Kennedy's speech at the dedication of the dam on Aug. 17, 1962. It also includes footage of various stages of the Oahe Dam's construction. The film will be shown at 2 p.m. and 2:45 p.m.
State archivist Chelle Somsen says showing the film footage is part of an effort to draw attention to historical collections and preservation efforts to protect South Dakota's history. Gov. Dennis Daugaard earlier declared October as Archives Month.
