A Fort Pierre couple has pledged a $1 million charitable gift for a variety of projects and organizations in the city.
Gary and Connie Grittner announced the donation on Friday to the South Dakota Community Foundation.
The donation includes funding for the Verendrye Museum in Fort Pierre and a project to return an old railroad depot to the city. The couple also wants to help develop a gifted-student program.
The Grittners were both raised in Minnesota and worked for a research lab that had contracts with the federal government. They have lived in Fort Pierre for nine years.
South Dakota Community Foundation President Bob Sutton says the couple's gift is special because it funds projects dealing with the state's history and its future.
