Vice President Joe Biden says former US Sen. George McGovern was a "good and decent man."
Biden spoke about his former Senate colleague at a prayer service Thursday night. The 90-year-old McGovern died Sunday in Sioux Falls.
Biden says it took "political gumption" for McGovern to call out his Senate colleagues during a 1970 speech. In the speech, McGovern said the Senate chambers "reeks with blood" from the many young men dying in the Vietnam War.
McGovern was staunchly opposed to the war and campaigned on a promise to end it during the 1972 presidential election.
McGovern lost in a historic landslide to Richard Nixon in 1972.
Biden, who attended the service with his son Hunter, says it was an honor to know and work with McGovern.
