Daschle Reflects On McGovern's Impact

Daschle Reflects On McGovern's Impact

George McGovern was a cornerstone of American politics and helped shape the Democratic party we know today.

From local leadership to a run at the presidency, he was well known in the halls of Washington, D.C.

Former US Senator Tom Daschle worked closely with McGovern during his political career and knew him for more than four decades.  Daschle says he was an extraordinary admirer and follower of McGovern since the first time they met.

"Well, I most remember his incredible decency, his ability to listen, his ability to communicate with those who sometimes there were disagreements yet everybody walked away with the profound admiration and respect because of his goodness and decency." Daschle said during a phone interview.

Daschle says the things McGovern accomplished will have a lasting impression on South Dakota and the nation.

"He inspired me in large measure because of his advocacy for things I think are most important in this country, a belief in making sure everybody had good health and good education and were well fed, the belief that if we could only help young people acquire their aspirations through good health, good education, and good nutrition, there's nothing they couldn't do and wouldn't do. That was really what McGovernism was really all about and that's what inspired legions of people like me to follow him." Daschle said.

Daschle says he doesn't want to dwell on the sadness of losing McGovern but focus the many accomplishments he had.
