Wisconsin Center Part Of McGovern's Legacy

Wisconsin Center Part Of McGovern's Legacy
George McGovern

SIOUX FALLS, SD -

The director of the Teresa McGovern Center in Madison, Wis., says the late George McGovern's willingness to talk about his daughter's problems is part of his legacy.

George McGovern established the treatment center for victims of alcoholism and mental illness after Teresa was found dead in a Madison snowdrift in 1994 after battling alcoholism for years.

Center Director Mike Florek says George McGovern visited the center after it was built and talked with patients about his experiences with his daughter. Florek says if more people were open and compassionate like McGovern, the stigma of mental illness and addiction would be less and more people would seek treatment.

George McGovern, who lost the 1972 presidential race, died Sunday at a Sioux Falls hospice at age 90.
