South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard has asked that all flags in the state be flown at half-staff in honor of former U.S. Sen. George McGovern.
McGovern died Sunday morning in Sioux Falls.
Daugaard asks that all flags be flown at half-staff immediately for McGovern and remain that way each day from 8 a.m. to sunset through the day of his funeral. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced by McGovern's family.
Daugaard says McGovern made history as the only South Dakotan to be nominated for president. McGovern ran for president three times.
Daugaard called the former U.S. senator a "self-made man who served our nation, in war and in peace, with courage and conviction."
