Injured Trooper Has Successful Brain Surgery

October 18, 2012, 5:57 PM by Brady Mallory

Injured Trooper Has Successful Brain Surgery
Andrew Steen

He has spent eight years standing up for the people of Sioux Falls and judging by all of the supportive comments on his caringbridge website, people are standing behind 34-year-old South Dakota Highway Patrol Trooper Andrew Steen.

Steen remains in critical condition, but according to a release from the Department of Public Safety, Steen had surgery Thursday morning to relieve pressure on his brain.  Doctors at Sanford Medical Center said the surgery was not uncommon with head injuries such as trooper Steen has.

According to his caringbridge website, Steen sustained a significant head injury that included a skull fracture. His right ankle was broken and dislocated.  The site also mentions Steen has been in a medically-induced coma and will remain that way for a few days to allow his brain to stabilize.

Superintendent of the South Dakota Highway Patrol Colonel Craig Price said Steen "is receiving the best possible care and he has the full support and prayers of not only his family and friends but also of everyone in the South Dakota Highway Patrol and the Department of Public Safety."

Price said Steen's family appreciates all of the public support.

Steen was involved in an Wednesday morning car pursuit in western Sioux Falls.  Witnesses say a 25-year-old female was driving at what looked like 90 miles per hour.  Later on in an area parking lot, authorities say the female hit his car.  Then when Steen got out of his car, authorities say she ran him over.

According to his caringbridge site, Steen had no other internal injuries.

Authorities still are not releasing the name of the 25-year-old woman.

If you want to help out, The Trooper Andrew Steen Benefit Fund, has been set up at Wells Fargo. Donations may be made at any Wells Fargo bank in the United States.
